Commercial opportunities for retailers

Rita Bancroft • October 19, 2022

This feature takes a closer look at contract specification flooring. Many flooring brands supply products for both the residential and contract sector, and many retailers supply and fit commercial projects which range from hotels, guest houses, pubs, restaurants, holiday lets, and even schools.

Adam Carpets is a great example of a manufacturing business geared to provide fast turnaround on contract specification carpet with the support of their local retailers. The design team at Adam Carpets responded quickly to the brief to replace flood-damaged carpet for The Bay Hotel in Kinghorn, Scotland. The bespoke design was made using their ICN overtuft technology, resulting in the new carpet being made within a 4 week window.

Any design featured in Adam Carpets ICN overtuft brochure or on their commercial website can be produced to a client's choice of colour and pattern combination, in a specification to suit their end use. The minimum order quantity of 150 square metres, makes this a viable choice for independent hotels and commercial businesses. The carpet can be manufactured in either 4 metre or 5 metre widths, to reduce waste.

"All elements of design and production takes place in
Adam Carpets own manufacturing facility in Kidderminster,
ensuring clients can be confident at every stage from design,
through to dyeing, tufting, backing and despatch."

In addition to their commercial design library, Adam Carpets also provide a bespoke design and manufacturing service. Designs and colour palettes are developed to meet their clients interior design brief and suitability requirement. Indeed, proposed design images in JPEG or PDF format and accompanying hand trial can be produced within 5 working days, and carpet can be manufactured within 4 working weeks, on receipt of a cleared deposit. All elements of design and production takes place in Adam Carpets own manufacturing facility in Kidderminster, ensuring clients can be confident at every stage from design, through to dyeing, tufting, backing and despatch.

As part of the push towards achieving a more circular economy, Joseph, Hamilton and Seaton (JHS) are proud to have recently launched four new commercial carpet tile products with enhanced recycled content.

The Wave Length, Overlay and Outline ranges all contain 50% overall recycled content. Manufactured using 100% PA6 Solution Dyed Nylon yarn, these options provide integral colour combined with the chemical resistance, excellent abrasion resistance, strength and durability that is associated with this proven polyamide material. The secondary backings are manufactured using ‘back2back’ waste from the tile cutting process – waste that is shredded and then added into the secondary backing, providing 10% post-industrial recycled content. The filler used in the backing is wholly sourced from a limestone mining waste stream, diverting this waste from landfill, and providing 100% post-industrial recycled content.

“Wave Length is available in 11 different colours and offers a gradient-like barcode effect that would be at home in any
commercial space.”

Wave Length is available in 11 different colours and offers a gradient-like barcode effect that would be at home in any commercial space. Overlay, also available in 11 colours presents a palette ranging from subtle tones of grey and black, to bright and bold reds and greens. Meanwhile, a combination of contrasting tones in 16 colourways creates a washed effect that balances out the pattern seen in Outline.

The innovative Colour Foundation Tile range achieves 64% overall recycled content. It utilises the same back2back waste process for the secondary backing, and the same recycled limestone waste product for the backing filler but is manufactured using ECONYL Regenerated Solution Dyed Nylon yarn. Made wholly from post-industrial and
post-consumer Polyamide 6 waste, Colour Foundation is available in
36 vibrant colours, ensuring exceptional versatility for this exciting
new range.

It’s no secret that one of the biggest issues facing the UK flooring industry is the shortage of skilled labour, and this is a problem that’s only likely to get worse as the older generation hangs up its tools and finds fewer and fewer young hands willing to take up the trade. While the overall declining interest in practical trades is a matter to be addressed by all stakeholders – particularly at a Government level – flooring manufacturers and specialised training outfits have long been playing their parts to raise standards within the industry.
