renu ready to be recycled after its role at COP26
The environmental credentials of Interfloor's new green renu underlay have been boosted by the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow - and it's ready to be recycled as the event closes.
Interfloor supplied 286 rolls of its first fully sustainable and ethically produced underlay renu for the COP26 event and in keeping with the spirit of the International Environmental Conference agenda, Interfloor has committed not only to supply the carpet underlay but to recycle once world leaders have left Glasgow.
Interfloor CEO John Cooper said: “We are all rightly concerned about how we treat our planet, and we are proud to be supplying COP26 with a product that meets not only the values of the conference but our own ideals too.
“One of the standout qualities of renu is that when the world leaders have left the conference, it will be fully recycled. It is without question the most sustainable underlay in our long history, and we were delighted that it has been recognised by COP26 in striving for this full circle of ‘no waste’.
“We have made great strides in improving efficiency and increasing sustainability over the decades, but this new product is a game-changer, bringing together raw materials that we save from going to landfill with some that actually have a positive effect on the environment," said John.
The renu underlay will be returned to Interfloor’s Haslingden site in Lancashire where it will be re-granulated and made into new rolls of renu.
Whilst driven by a vision to utilise post-consumer waste to aim for 100% genuine recycling in the manufacture and after life of a high-quality underlay, the Interfloor team that developed this innovative sustainable underlay also ensured it met the Tredaire brands well recognised features of luxury and comfort.
renu is made from 98% recycled materials, using ethically sourced and genuinely recycled materials, which means keeping waste from landfill and is 100% recyclable itself.
The main body of the underlay is made of foam reclaimed from recycled soft furnishings, this foam is then mixed with a binding agent and subject to high temperature steam under high pressure. The backing is made from 100% recycled & unbleached paper, and water-based inks are used for printing.
The film used on renu is made from an ethically produced, carbon-negative bio-based film that comes from sugar cane. The sugar cane actively captures CO2 from the atmosphere, whilst at the same time releasing oxygen – making this material not just green, but proactively green. 100% recycled plastic is also used for the packaging, at all times striving to use the most environmentally friendly options possible.
