Future fibres enhance consumer choice

Even during the most challenging times, it’s great to see the focus our industry places on new product development. Carpets that are easy to maintain, provide comfort underfoot, have great style, and are friendly to the environment and our homes. In this feature we look at how new fibre technology and developments in natural materials has enhanced consumer choice.

Alternative Flooring’s new waterproof Anywhere collection is suitable for... well... just about anywhere. Inside, outside, bathrooms, the possibilities are endless...

This ingenious indoor-outdoor carpet is a look-a-like sisal made from 100% polypropylene. It has the visual texture of sisal but can be fitted ‘anywhere’ including kitchens and bathrooms. Partnered by inside-out borders, Anywhere is perfect for outdoor rugs too.

Easily cleanable, Anywhere makes a stylish residential flooring as well as a great choice for commercial applications. Available in five designs, Boucle, Panama, Herringbone, Rope and most recently Shadow, Anywhere is ideal for homes, hotels or the office.

Alternative Flooring’s No Bother Sisal carpet is a game-changing development in natural floorcovering. It looks the same as sisal on top, but underneath is another ‘natural story’ – the new improved flexible backing means that it can be traditionally fitted.  This ‘new backing’ also means that this Sisal now has a Cfl–s1 fire classification, perfect for contract applications.

This easy fit natural also has GUT classification; carpets tested for a better living environment.

No Bother Sisal can also be made into custom rugs, runners and stair runners, and is available in two designs Sisal Boucle and Sisal Super Boucle and four colourways.

Millie Barlow, head of marketing,
Abingdon Flooring explains how their fibre technology has developed, “While polypropylene still dominates the fibre landscape, carpets using polyester yarns, such as our hugely popular Love Story collection, have been opening consumers up to qualities that are much softer and just as easy to live with.

“The growing acceptance of polyester by purchasers is undoubtedly going to drive an increasing number of products to market. With Love Story, we’ve been there right from the beginning and this puts us in a great position to really help retailers capitalise on the fibre’s popularity.

“Love Story’s maturity in the market sees it well-established in stores with compelling point of sale that is sure to drive interest.

The two polyester styles within the collection, Deep Feelings and Lasting Romance, have been fine-tuned with 16 proven colour options and a Saxony pile that brings an elegant finish. The added lustre of polyester adds a modern feel, but we’ve been careful not to overdo it and so Love Story has a universal appeal that not all polyester carpets manage so successfully.

She adds, “As far as future fibres go, we believe that polyester will continue to enjoy growth and with Love Story, retailers can benefit from a long-standing collection that’s already proven a huge hit among consumers.”

Adam Carpets use 100% accredited UK wool in their carpets; all manufactured in their modern factory in Kidderminster. Wool is undoubtedly the original future fibre, natural and renewable every year as it is grown to protect sheep from the wet, windy and cold British winter weather, so it’s resilient and durable.

Chris Adam, managing director at Adam Carpets explains the science, “Wool has been grown in the UK for over 6,000 years and over that time has been carefully honed to provide the best characteristics for making textiles. The complex protein structure provides unique benefits in carpet, such as its superior performance underfoot which comes from the crimp that is grown naturally into the fibre, and this provides the best resilience whilst insulating the room at the same time. Its scaly structure naturally prevents soiling and contributes to its fire resistance; wool is considered one of the safest fibres for flooring. These are just some of the features which make wool rich carpets naturally hard-wearing and easy to care for,
which is increasingly important in today’s busy family homes”.
Adam Carpets recently refreshed their popular Flare collection with two new colourways.

‘Mocha’ represents the movement towards warm woody neutrals. It brings both warmth and a sense of calm to a space. Just what we need in an uncertain world! This elegant and timeless colourway provides the perfect base colour to build a room upon. ‘Spearmint’ is a contemporary alternative to grey and heralds the start of a new decade, embodying an optimistic mood beyond the challenging times we are enduring. Its subtle green hue promotes a sense of wellbeing.

Available in 10 on-trend colourways, Flare’s chevron design is incredibly versatile as it looks sensational on stairs, in lounges, studies and bedrooms. Flare is made using 100% accredited UK wool, combined with premium nylon 6.6. The 2-ply yarn construction ensures softness underfoot with the assurance of added durability and performance. It is available in both a 4 metre and a unique 5 metre width to provide retailers with greater flexibility for larger rooms. The choice of widths means consumers can be confident there are fewer joins.

Like all Adam Carpets, the Flare range is made in their own modern factory in Kidderminster and co-ordinates beautifully with their celebrated Fine Worcester and Castlemead Twist ranges.

We are all familiar with Smart Phones, Smart Appliances, Smart Cars, Smart Motorways….and now Lano has introduced Smart Carpets. Gary Alp, sales manager at
Lano explains, “Our revolutionary SmartStrand fibre carpets are the only carpets on the market today that can boast of all of the benefits of the other fibre types.”

Performance & Softness: The spring-like Triexta fibre molecules ensure your carpet will bounce back into shape after vacuuming, even after years. This property enables Lano to create very soft qualities without compromising the resilience of the carpet. No need for
chemical softeners.

Clean-ability: SmartStrand Forever Clean features Nanoloc, an advanced nanotechnology that completely encapsulates the SmartStrand fibre to create a superior spill and soil barrier.

SmartStrand Forever Clean is the only carpet with stain resistance built into the core of the fibre which means that it simply does not hold onto dirt. Through independent vacuum testing, SmartStrand Forever Clean has been shown to release up to three times more dirt than other carpets meaning you can breathe easy knowing that your floor cleans up faster, better and more easily than ordinary carpet.

Green: SmartStrand Forever Clean is composed partly of annually renewable plant-based materials that minimise Lano’s usage of limited natural resources. This also enables them to reduce their energy consumption in the manufacturing processes of all SmartStrand Forever Clean carpets. Lano’s aim was to offer consumers the beauty, softness and durability they desire in a carpet without harming our beautiful planet.

Triexta was recognised in 2009 and classified as its own fibre type such are the characteristics and performance differences of SmartStrand vs other fibre types. The first classification of a new fibre type for residential carpet use in 50 years. Gary Alp concludes, “You wouldn’t buy a television, car or other appliance with outdated 1950s technology – now you have don’t have to with carpets.”

It’s no secret that one of the biggest issues facing the UK flooring industry is the shortage of skilled labour, and this is a problem that’s only likely to get worse as the older generation hangs up its tools and finds fewer and fewer young hands willing to take up the trade. While the overall declining interest in practical trades is a matter to be addressed by all stakeholders – particularly at a Government level – flooring manufacturers and specialised training outfits have long been playing their parts to raise standards within the industry.
