Sales volumes "suppressed" in seasonal trading
The seasonal boost to flooring sales in the run up to Christmas is falling short of expectations says the UK's leading distributor.
In a trading update to shareholders the Headlam group said: "To date in November 2022, a month heavily reliant on residential orders, the Company has seen a seasonal uplift but this is below historic levels and this trend is expected to continue until year end."
Blaming "the impact of the cost of living crisis suppressing market volumes in the UK residential sector", the Midlands-based plc said its performance for the year would be "marginally below the low end of the range of market expectations."
However, the group said the sluggish UK retail trading was offset by growth in the commercial sector and a positive performance in Continental Europe.
Headlam also repported progress in its growth strategy through new larger customer wins and its trade counter roll out, along with support from price inflation. "The Company's strategy of driving new revenue to gain market share from a more efficient operating base has helped provide a countermeasure against the market weakness, and will continue to do so during 2023," it said.
