The unseen opportunity of underlay

September 30, 2021
Underlay options abound right now, elevating the opportunity to add to a flooring sale with a diverse range of underlayment products at different price points and with varying performance and environmental credentials.

And with order levels remaining high and, allegedly, less price sensitive amongst consumers at the moment, there is also the potential for premium pricing for underlay that has a “good story” to tell!

Interfloor’s new sustainable underlay, renu, is made by bringing together raw materials that are saved from going to landfill with some that have a positive effect on the environment.

renu is a sustainable, recycled carpet underlay sitting within the Tredaire range of luxury underlays for the home and is without question the most sustainable underlay in Interfloor’s long history.

It’s made from 98% recycled materials, using ethically sourced and genuinely recycled materials, which means keeping waste from going to landfill and is 100% recyclable itself.

The main body of the underlay is made of 100% post-consumer recycled foam and the backing is made from 100% recycled and unbleached paper; vegetable-based inks are used for printing.

The facing film is made from an ethically produced, carbon-negative bio-based film made from sugar cane. The sugar cane actively captures CO2 from the atmosphere whilst at the same time releasing oxygen – making this material not just green, but proactively green.

.Ulster Carpets are offering an extended guarantee of up to 10 years on their axminster and wilton carpets installed with Axfelt Triple Layer Underlay.

Customers choosing to complement their new Ulster carpet with Axfelt will now qualify for an extended guarantee of an extra four years to the company’s standard six year guarantee.

As highlighted at The Flooring Show in Harrogate, this is a great opportunity for retailers to highlight the advantages of combining quality carpet with luxury underlay and how the two work
perfectly together.

Manufactured in Ulster’s facilities in Devon, Axfelt is made from 100% recycled materials, including wool, cloth, carpet and lorry and tractor tyres. Not only is Axfelt a sustainable product but performs superbly. Providing the perfect foundation for carpet, the three layer construction is particularly good at crush recovery and also offers improved durability and insulation benefits.

Texfelt offer a wide range of performance underlays and are manufacturers of Springbond the UK’s fastest growing underlay brand. Springbond is eco-engineered in a brand new state of the art manufacturing facility in West Yorkshire and was developed to provide an environmentally conscious alternative to PU Foam that doesn’t compromise on performance.

Springbond is designed to be greener - using over 85% recycled PET plastic, the equivalent of over 180 bottles per roll plus the material is 100% recyclable after use. It is also cleaner - Springbond is dust free and emits virtually no VOC’s – and quieter - it offers industry leading acoustic protection from impact sound transference and safer - made from clean and inert recycled PET, Springbond is also chemical free, making it safer for fitters and users and is a hypoallergenic product.

As it is made in the UK, Texfelt can deliver quickly and efficiently with a smaller carbon footprint than imported products.

Choosing the perfect partner for a Penthouse carpet is easy with one of the manufacturer’s own brand of eco-friendly luxury underlays, made from recycled carpet fibre waste.

Carpet waste is generated during the manufacturing process and, together with an industry leader in fibre reclamation, Penthouse developed the “Eco-Felt” range of underlays, as an alternative to carpet waste going to landfill.

Using 100% recycled materials; these Penthouse underlays ensure that the carpet feels amazing to walk on and looks beautiful for longer, with the added bonus of superior sound and thermal insulation properties.

Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise. comments: “Providing that all round luxury feel has been a foundation for our Feel the Difference underlays.

“With the range already well established as a premium option, the next step was to expand it with a product that encapsulated the underfoot comfort while providing a more competitive price point,” he said.

Created using recycled PU, Desire is a UK made, 9mm thick SHD+ specification underlay that is priced to provide affordability without compromise. Desire joins the popular Elegance and Prestige options from floorwise and provides fitters and retailers an opportunity to offer a wider option of luxury underlays for homeowners.

Brand-new Desire and the rest of the Feel the Difference collection is available from floorwise distributors across the UK and Ireland.

Brand recognition for quality and a British manufacturing base has helped build business for
Carpenter who are now seen among the market leaders for competitive quality in the underlay sector.

“We invested in carefully developing the right range of performance underlay options across a wide portfolio of use cases and then built our brand to wrap them up into a package that retailers and installers can trust,” says Helen Rowberry of Carpenter.

The British label has become increasingly important to the market says Helen with offshore supply-chain issues compromising the reliability of imported stock. Demand is exceeding supply across the sector at the moment but manufacturing in Derbyshire means Carpenter can give a more realistic assessment of availability and the company is hoping to increase capacity in the medium term to meet the needs of the market.
Made of 90% recycled polyurethane foam,

Carpenter underlay is guaranteed for the life of the carpet and when it is uplifted it can be completely recycled – a key sales point for increasingly environmentally aware consumers.

Luxe Underlay says “not all carpet underlay is created equal” and prides itself on offering exceptional, innovative products to the market including the latest Luxe Silk 11mm premium hybrid memory foam underlay.

Constructed from a viscoelastic polymer with superior tensile and elasticity properties, Luxe Silk has exceptional load bearing strength and stress dissipation properties that supports a carpet’s long-term performance in high traffic areas. It also incorporates a reinforcement grid and moisture barrier.

Luxe Silk has enhanced sound and thermal insulation properties, reducing noise transmission throughout the installation and more energy efficiency. This product is also treated with Ultra-fresh antimicrobial protection making Silk the perfect underlayment for a warmer, drier, healthier home – guaranteed for the lifetime of a new carpet.

Cybergold provides a profitable opportunity from upselling for anti-slip rug underlays.

Just sold a rug or hard floor? Your customer is delighted with their purchase but they are unlikely to think about how they can keep the rug in place and stop it from moving and creeping. It’s the same for hard floors as rugs will literally skate on top of the floor and can create a very dangerous situation if no rug anti-slip is used.

Fortunately Cybergold has the solution and it will not only please the customer, it will please you too by increasing your sales.
Cybergold has been manufacturing a wide range of anti-slip sprays and underlays for more than 20 years. There are 2 types of sprays, standard and super strength, for hessian backed rugs and 3 types of underlay for standard rugs to thin Persian style rugs. And all products are guaranteed to work.
