Diagonal designs drive the LVT wood market

December 31, 2021

Increasingly sophisticated consumer demand for ever better wood vinyl floors is driving forward a flooring sector that’s keen to invest in technology and compete on design.

And just when the sales might have been levelling out two or three years ago, the public re-discovered parquet and the industry got a sharp new angle to exploit – a diagonal angle to be precise with herringbone in the ascendancy. Expect lots of new ranges to sustain the market’s momentum in 2022.

Herringbone and parquet designs are definitely pushing sales for leading LVT specialist
Karndean Designflooring. Meeting the desire for organic colours, textures and patterns, Karndean has been steadily expanding its range of tile sizes and format options.

Karndean Designflooring – Van Gogh Rigid Core Salvaged Barnwood

Proving there’s no need to sacrifice style for practicality, the Van Gogh multi-format collection offers a range of oak and American barnwood designs in full-sized planks and contemporary 28” x 7” herringbone.

With each design available in a choice of gluedown and rigid core formats, it’s now possible to take a customer’s favourite design from room to room using different laying patterns even over changing subfloor conditions.

Offering not only an authentic look of wood flooring, design flexibility and quick and easy installation, the superior acoustic benefits of Karndean’s rigid core designs makes this the practical choice for upstairs bedrooms and multi-level accommodation.

Furlong Flooring has seen a significant trend towards traditional hard flooring and wood effect vinyl decors. This is one of the reasons the company is investing in new vinyl ranges that offer highly realistic wood decors, helping homeowners get the look they want without having the additional care and fitting challenges, or price tags, that often come with hard flooring.

Furlong is launching four new vinyl ranges in the New Year, including Cirrus Woods which builds on the hard-wearing properties of its Cirrus range.

Cirrus Woods is a collection of traditional plank decors and modern herringbone designs for those looking for durability. With foam backing, this range is ideally suited to high-traffic areas and comes with a hygienic PU lacquer coating, protecting against the build-up of dirt. Plus, the range has excellent impact resistance and heat insultation properties, delivering value for money.

You’ll also find a range of plank and herringbone designs in Furlong’s newly updated Versatility II collection.

Invictus aspires to offer invincible flooring and none is finer – or more popular right now – than its perfect parquet ranges. The Invictus collection from Associated Weavers has more than 60 designs across the widest range of wood decors and stone effects but the company has caught the right vibe for the herringbone pattern that is setting the style agenda at the moment.

Associated Weavers – Royal Oak traditional townhouse hallway

Three showcase ranges are Highland Oak in six designs, New England Oak in four options, and now, the latest is Royal Oak — a superb product that puts the luxury into LVT with a grand, majestic look in three colours – Traditional oak plus on trend grey hues in Nordic and Dove.

As always, AW’s class-leading marketing brings these parquet ranges to life for consumers with exceptional point-of-sale support and advanced visualisation technology in-store and online to drive sales to retailers.

Combined with waterproof performance and an ultra-strong ScratchMaster coating which allows a 20-year warranty for heavy domestic use, it’s a powerful proposition.

Victoria Design Floors have taken the concept of the herringbone pattern as inspiration for their new Universal 55 range. A collection of six wood and two stone designs makes up this bespoke collection of 0.55mm, 5” x 30” herringbone planks. Available as both dryback and 2G click which includes built in underlay. These products can be laid not only in the classic herringbone zig zag, but also as a brick bond offering the fitter a number of design options.

Victoria Design Floors – Universal 55 latté herringbone parquet

We wanted to put a modern spin on the classic parquet concept and through offering this new collection of larger Herringbone designs, we have done just that,” says James Caldwell, Sales Director for Victoria Carpets & Design Floors.

Oneflor UK has launched its latest collection Workshop 55 in a stunning combination of embossed in-register woods with matching herringbone and chevron complimented with modern stone designs.

“We have seen the market grow in strength for the herringbone design floor and felt it was a good time to compliment this with the chevron design as well,” says UK sales director Jay Taylor.

“With five designs in herringbone and chevron we have carefully selected the colour pallet for the UK market offering light and traditional oaks through to the new trends in darker more smoked woods.”

Alongside the popularity of herringbone, Oneflor felt it was important to maintain the continuity in colour across their ranges and produce full length planks in matching shades.

This collection has a superior rigid Stone Plastic Composite (SPC) construction which offers advanced stability and the opportunity to loose lay over existing floors. Together with a new a 5G-i locking mechanism which simply drops down at the short side joint, and presses down to lock in place, installation is quick and easy.

The acoustic backing makes it warm and comfortable while suppressing noise and on top, a durable polyurethane reinforcement layer resists scratches and stains. Finally, EnCore Rigid Loc is 100% waterproof, so that makes it suitable for just about anywhere.

Inspired authenticity

“There’s always a temptation to think that as many wood-effect designs as possible make up a good collection, but we take a slightly different approach,” says Scott Arundell, sales director UK & Ireland, BerryAlloc. “In our Pure LVT collection as an example, our designers and product development team have worked on six unique wood structures, widening choice through providing each of these in a range of colours.

“This means they can focus on the design and texture details that will make our exclusive wood designs look incredibly authentic. Across the elegance of Classic Oak and the knots found in Authentic Oak to the rich tonal variation that runs through Columbian Oak, the Pure collection captures natural markings and realistic texture with exquisite detail,” he says.

From these six key woods, BerryAlloc has created created a wide-ranging palette – from the pale of Classic Oak in light greige to Intense Oak in dark grey – so that consumers can enjoy the right natural wood look in the perfect shade. There is still freedom of choice with a natural wood look and colour – there are 12 different options in grey alone – to match their interior – from just six wood effects, the Pure collection creates 35 individual looks.

It’s no secret that one of the biggest issues facing the UK flooring industry is the shortage of skilled labour, and this is a problem that’s only likely to get worse as the older generation hangs up its tools and finds fewer and fewer young hands willing to take up the trade. While the overall declining interest in practical trades is a matter to be addressed by all stakeholders – particularly at a Government level – flooring manufacturers and specialised training outfits have long been playing their parts to raise standards within the industry.
