Reimagining Luxury: Brontë by Made to Measure Carpets

May 6, 2025

In the below article, Made to Measure Carpets’ Irfan Iqbal discusses how the company is carrying forward the traditions of British carpet manufacturing.

Having twenty years of experience in business ownership, my resilience and determination has led me to become a strong crusader in maintaining the traditions of British carpet manufacturing.

Recently, I was fortunate enough to purchase the machinery and full quality catalogue from a well-established player in the flooring industry, marking a significant milestone, bringing together two companies with a shared vision for excellence and innovation. Following the closure of Brontë Carpets of Colne, Lancashire, I proudly launched Brontë by Made to Measure Carpets.

Under my management, the integration has been seamless, a move that has proven to be highly advantageous. The journey began with the meticulous transport of the original Brontë machinery, stock, and sample material to our site in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Over the course of the first year, with the full support of the original Brontë owners, we devoted ourselves to research and development. With our combined resources and expertise, this period began with upskilling our workforce to perfect the qualities, standards, and specifications that Brontë Carpets were renowned for, ensuring the Brontë legacy lives on.

This dedication has given us over 40 years of bespoke carpet manufacturing experience, enabling us to fulfil regular orders worldwide. It is also allowing us to be better equipped to meet the diverse needs of our customers and drive innovation in carpet and rug solutions.

Brontë by Made to Measure is proud to be the largest remaining luxury carpet and rug manufacturer in Great Britain specialising in oversized pieces. Our varied range ensures suitability in all domestic areas, including stairs and other high-footfall zones, without compromising on the luxurious look and feel.

The core of our operation is a steadfast commitment to quality and individuality. Every carpet and rug crafted in our workshop is a testament to our dedication, carefully designed to reflect the unique tastes and preferences of our clients. Our skilled team complement traditional techniques with modern technology to create masterpieces that not only meet but exceed expectations.

From start to finish, our bespoke service is tailored for a seamless experience. Clients are invited to be part of the creative process, selecting from an array of premium wool, textures, colours, and designs. This collaborative approach ensures each project is as unique as the space it enhances.

Our base in West Yorkshire is more than just an operational hub; it is a source of inspiration. The county’s rich textile heritage and natural beauty deeply influence our designs, imbuing them with a sense of place and history. We pride ourselves on sourcing the finest materials, including sustainable and ethically produced fibres, to create beautiful yet environmentally responsible flooring.

Innovation is at the heart of our ethos. Our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility boasts the latest technology, allowing us to produce intricate designs with precision and efficiency. However, it is the expertise of our craftsmen and women – that sets us apart, ensuring each bespoke carpet and rug is a true work of art.

Since the expansion, we have laid strong foundations and now look forward to the next five years and beyond. Our vision is to continuously innovate and introduce fresh ideas, ensuring we remain at the forefront of luxury carpet and rug manufacturing.

Whether you seek to create a statement piece for a grand foyer, a cosy centerpiece for a living room, or a durable yet stylish solution for a commercial space, our bespoke carpets and rugs offer endless possibilities. Join us in our journey to elevate interiors of custom carpets and rugs, crafted with passion in West Yorkshire.

It’s no secret that one of the biggest issues facing the UK flooring industry is the shortage of skilled labour, and this is a problem that’s only likely to get worse as the older generation hangs up its tools and finds fewer and fewer young hands willing to take up the trade. While the overall declining interest in practical trades is a matter to be addressed by all stakeholders – particularly at a Government level – flooring manufacturers and specialised training outfits have long been playing their parts to raise standards within the industry.
